Historical Significance

The Angus Tartan, designed by Clans Originaux in 1880, carries a rich and storied history. It first appeared in the Clans Originaux of 1880 and was later featured in the Neilson, Shaw, and MacGregor catalogue of 1888. By 1906, it was included in W & A K Johnston's "Tartans of the Clans & Septs". Initially, this tartan was considered a clan or family tartan, but it has since evolved to represent the district of Angus, a historic county on the east coast of Scotland, bordered by Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire to the north, the Firth of Tay to the south, and Perthshire to the west. The name "The Only One" possibly refers to the Angus King of Dalriada in the ninth century, symbolizing its deep roots in Scottish history. The tartan is associated with Clan MacInnes, believed to be descendants of the Dalriada Scots, and the Earldom of Angus, which has been held by both the Stewarts and Douglases. Interestingly, there was no county named Angus in 1880; it was known as Forfarshire until 1928, which supports the tartan's initial identification as a clan or family tartan. The Gaelic name for Angus is Aonghus, and it is noted that the lineage of this tartan dates back to before the eighth century, being connected to Oenghus, King of Dalriada.

Color Scheme & Pattern

The Angus Tartan features a bold combination of blue, black, and red. The blue and black base provides a classic foundation, while the striking red overcheck adds a vibrant contrast to the design. This timeless and elegant pattern is perfect for honoring Scottish heritage, with its dark and bright colors making it suitable for both formal events and everyday wear. The intricate arrangement of stripes and checks reflects the craftsmanship involved in creating each piece, ensuring that every tartan item is truly a work of art.
